Understanding the legal aspects of open source software projects

Since I released my first GPL work, I have been interested by what it means to use the GPL license. I am not a lawyer and all those related legal questions just make my brain boil in my head. I did take the time to read the main parts of the license but it was painful.

I have also been interested by the other licenses available. There are so many of them and most seems to have only minor changes from each other.

Licenses can be quite confusing but in the legal realm there are also organizational issues, patents and trademark issues which must be addressed sooner or later in an open source software project.

I recently found this interesting paper by the Software Freedom Law Center about all those legal issues. I does a good job of explaining the legal aspects in simple terms. I highly recommend it for anyone developing an open source software or anyone planing on doing so.
