My first Wii experience

Since Nintendo launched the Wii console, I have been craving to try it. Unfortunately, I had no friend that bought one and each time I went to a game store, their Wii would either be broken or some kid would be monopolizing it.

I wanted to try it because I heard good things about it. I heard some of my friends saying that it was innovative, exciting and just plain fun to play with it. I also read some great reviews about it. I am a proud owner of a Nintendo DS, the first generation. I like how Nintendo is taking risks by trying new things in a world where other players are mainly reselling the same all the time with better graphics.

My mom called me the other day to chat about what is new and interesting. In the end of our phone call, she told me: “By the way, I just won a Wii”. My eye grew wide and my first though was that is has been a while since I have not visited my parents; I should plan something. My mom is so lucky. She wins things all the time.

Back to my parent’s house, the first thing I did was to install their Wii. It was quite easy: I plugged the power supply, I plugged the infrared receiver and I plugged the video cables in the VCR.

I pushed the power button and held the remote controller tightly. My first impression was simply: “Wow !”. Most interface/controller actions feel like natural. You point and click. It is as simple as that.

I loaded Wii Sports and gave it a first try. Bowling was my first choice.

Getting started to throw the ball was difficult until I had a look at the pictogram in the lower right part of the screen. You really have to raise the remote controller before can you throw. I did some pretty good scores. I did a bit better than what I do in real life. I guess it is easier to throw a virtual ball than a real one or that the game is made to be easier.

Later on, I figured out that I could create my own Mii, a virtual character that is reused in the games. I did so and ask my parents and my girlfriend to do the same.

My parents tried it and they really enjoyed it. They preferred bowling, tennis and golf. They like to play tennis together against the computer. My parents are not the types to play console games but they had a good time playing with the Wii. My mom even asked me to buy her the new Super Smash Bros. Brawl game and a dance dance game for her console.

My girlfriend and I tried the other game my mom won with her console: Wii Play. It was interesting and fun but I think we would get quickly bored playing it over and over.

In the end, I liked my first experience with the Wii. It opened a totally new area of gaming and it is fun. I could not asked for more.
