Creating life with DNA engineering

Can you imagine a world where we create life by taking the building blocks and putting them together just like you are building your Lego castle? Stop thinking, this is happening right now.

This is what the J. Craig Venter Institute is pretending. They did a presentation last February on TED about what they are doing with their expertise. They are not creating complicated life yet but they can manipulate the DNA a single bacteria to make it produce different molecules.

The goal? To create a bacteria that converts CO2 into oil with maximum efficiency as cheap as possible. Their humble target is to replace the entire petroleum industry while being green at the same time. It is the oil -> CO2 -> oil circle with the help of nature or custom made life.

Arthur C. Clarke once said:

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

We are now in the realm of magic.
